David Sassoon Library

In the 19th century, readers at Mumbai’s David Sassoon Library enjoyed a rich collection of books in a grand Victorian Gothic setting. With its charming arches, louvred windows, Minton tiles and elegant lamps, the library and reading room offered a regal ambience. Today, while the view from its first-storey veranda has changed, thoughtful restoration efforts have ensured its timeless design remains as captivating as ever.

The David Sassoon Library is the latest addition to the Kala Ghoda Association’s list of restoration projects in the precinct. The 16-month initiative, which began in February 2022, culminated in June 2023 with the library’s reopening to the public. Led by conservation architect Abha Narain Lambah, the project beautifully brought the vision of the team to life.
